In 2009 I had back surgery which included a spinal fusion of vertebrae L4, L5, and S1. The surgery was successful, but I suffer severe muscle pain. The muscles actually knot up in several spots in my lower back. They were right at my belt line and were about the size of ping-pong balls. They were actually visible.
After 5 nights of acupuncture treatments the muscle knots were reduced to small marble size, and several were gone. The doctor asked that I do not take any pain medication while I was undergoing acupuncture, so she could tell what areas we were making success in. I had been taking Hydrocodone once per day.
After the acupuncture treatments, I did not need pain relief. I did not take any pain medication for 7 months. I had an annual physical, and mentioned to my primary care physician that I had not refilled nor taken any of my prescribed pain medications. He looked at my records and confirmed that the last refill was 7 months ago. He asked what I did to reduce the pain and I said “I had acupuncture treatments”.
I told him some knots were getting bigger and I’d like a referral to an acupuncture clinic locally. He gave me the referral, and I was seeing Dr. Kitty Wong-Robertson at Heartland Oriental Medicine within 2 weeks.
Since seeing Dr. Wong-Robertson the lower back muscle knots are gone, I am not taking ANY pain medication, and I can do more work by myself.
It was my opinion that acupuncture was quackery, weird science, spoof medicine, and was in your head…if you thought it worked, it would work for you!
My real opinion is…IT WORKS! In 10 years of taking hydrocodone pain medication, I never knew there was a “cure” to my low back pain. Dr. Wong-Robertson performing acupuncture treatments on my back has cured my back pain. I continue to do core muscle exercises and build up the muscles in my low back without pain. She has changed my life!”
The day after our first visit I woke feeling like the "Energizer bunny". I had my first good nights sleep in 9 months. The bags under my eyes were lighter and my face did not seem as puffy and my eyes weren't red and watery! I thought I was imagining this until our 16 years old asked what I had done differently with my make-up. At work that day my co-workers commented on the difference. I noticed the dull pain in my abdomen was less noticeable. I continued to feel and see visible changes over the next three weeks. My liver enzymes were checked during the end of the third week and were almost half of what they were when I started.
We have now been seeing Dr. Kitty for 7 months and both my husband and I are forever grateful for the positive impact she has had on our daily lives. The herbal supplements she offers (I use the liver cleanse) are now part of my daily routine. My husband also continues to benefit from her services after his accident where he sustained multiple broken ribs and a spleen laceration. I would encourage anybody who is seeking alternatives to traditional treatments to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kitty!
Attached is a comparison of my face and the visible change in fluid retention and skin tone after three weeks of acupuncture and liver cleansing herbs.
Thank you!”

Do you have additional concerns?
Does it hurt?
The most common concern about acupuncture is the fear of the needles. However, the needles used are very thin compared to needles used for injections of medicine. You’ll feel a little pressure as the needle pierces the skin. Once the needle is in the muscle, there should be no pain.
What illnesses are treated using acupuncture?
Both acute and chronic illnesses can be treated with acupuncture. Because everyone responds differently, the number of treatment sessions can vary for each individual. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture can successfully treat over 100 diseases, symptoms, and conditions. Read the WHO report or read the VA report.
Is acupuncture safe for children?
In the hands of a trained practitioner, yes, according to a new study in the journal Pediatrics.
